My son, Declan, was rushed to Akron Children’s ER in Boardman, Ohio, when he was 19 days old with trouble breathing. During his triage, everything looked good and we were sent back to see the doctor for a check up.
After a chest x-ray, we were told that he was in respiratory and heart failure and would be admitted.
We are very grateful that every question was answered as best it could be and he was treated with the best staff anyone could every ask for. We went in being told he might have to have a heart transplant and left with him just on medicine that he needs to take daily.
Right now he goes to see the wonderful Dr. Grace Smith and he is stable and down to only taking 3 medicines a day for his heart. He was considered failure to thrive but today he is a thriving little boy at 8 months old.
As part of our year-long anniversary celebration, we’ll be telling the story of Akron Children’s through the eyes of past and present employees, doctors, donors, volunteers and patient families. We encourage you to share your own memories and stories about us.
