However, after a while, we realized this was not going to be as smooth as the last delivery. After an emergency C-section, Gabe was barely alive. He was limp and unresponsive, not breathing on his own.
Akron Children’s transport team came to our hospital to take Gabe up to the NICU. They were wonderful. Honestly, I wasn’t even certain when they left if my little boy was going to make it through the night.
They took great care to get him stabilized as much as they could and even brought him to my room for a moment before they left for Akron.
Doctors determined that Gabe had suffered a stroke at some point during or immediately after delivery. He spent 11 days in the NICU and followed neurologists at Akron Children’s for several years after.
I will forever be grateful for the care and compassion we experienced while Gabe was a patient there. At first, we were not certain if our little boy was going to survive for even the first 10 minutes after delivery. On April 7, we celebrated Gabe’s 10th birthday!
Thank you for all of your wonderful work. I will be forever grateful!
As part of our year-long anniversary celebration, we’re telling the story of Akron Children’s through the eyes of past and present employees, doctors, donors, volunteers and patient families. We encourage you to share your own memories and stories about us.
